Penne Arrabbiata

Arrabbiata literally means “angry” in Italian. The sauce originates from the Lazio region, and particularly from the city of Rome. In Rome, any food cooked in a pan with a lot of oil, garlic and chilli to provoke a strong thirst, is called Arrabbiato.

The invention of this dish dates back to the 1950s-60s, at a time when hot food came in vogue in Roman cuisine. Let’s get started with this easy but tasty pasta recipe for a lazy dinner night.

Ingredient List

  • 1 bowl pasta
  • 2 onions chopped
  • 2 tomatoes chopped
  • 1 tablespoon oil
  • 3/4 teaspoon oregano
  • 3/4 teaspoon red chilli flakes
  • 3 tablespoon cream
  • 1/4 teaspoon Sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon Red chilli powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon Black Pepper
  • Salt to taste

How to prepare

  • Take a pan and boil water. Put the pasta in boiled water and cook it for 8 minutes.
  • The ring in between the pasta will ensure that the pasta is cooked. Once it is cooked, put them aside. Drain the water with the help of a strainer and wash it with cold water.
  • Take another pan and heat some oil. Add onions and tomatoes and let them be a bit mushy.
  • Add all the remaining ingredients that include oregano, red chilli flakes, cream, some sugar, red chilli powder, salt and black pepper powder.
  • Cook it for 5-7 minutes.
  • Allow it to cool down completely.
  • Grind it into a smooth paste. No lumps should be there.
  • Take a pan and put a little bit of oil and then add the prepared paste and after one or two minutes add the boiled pasta.
  • Your Penne Arrabbiata is all set to serve.
