  • Who invented Nachos?

“Necessity is the mother of invention” truly fits when it comes to the invention of this Mexican Dish. One fine day, some visitors arrived at the Victory Club restaurant, Coahuila, Mexico and the chef was nowhere to be seen so the Maître d’hôtel Mr Ignacio Nacho Anaya went out of his way to please the guests.

Immediately, he went to the kitchen of the restaurant and took some fried tortillas and topped them with grated cheese and voila! the end result was an immediate success. The guests wanted to know the name of this never-seen-before snack and he replied “Nachos Especiales,” or “Nacho’s special”. This is how the popular Mexican dish came into the picture.

  • Why are generally Nachos chips triangular in shape?

The credit for the triangular tortilla chips goes to Rebecca Webb Carranza. This was done to make use of misshapen tortillas rejected from the automated tortilla manufacturing machine that she and her husband used at their Mexican delicatessen and tortilla factory in southwest Los Angeles.

Tortilla chips or nacho chips are usually deep-fried to make them crisp and delicious but alternatively can also be baked.

  • What is the difference between Nachos and Tortilla chips?

Tortilla chips are a stand-alone snack made from corn tortillas, which are cut into triangles and then fried or baked whereas Nachos comprises of tortilla chips which are layered, flavoured, and seasoned with vegetables, cheese or any other toppings. In restaurants, these are usually served as appetizers, or they are also eaten as snacks.

Although the salsa and cheese dip will top the chart but there can be other toppings that can be tried out. Popular ones are sour cream, jalapenos, olives, lettuce, broccoli, cauliflower, mango salsa etc.

Ingredients for Salsa

  • 3 medium-sized tomato
  • 1 medium-sized onion
  • 1 green chilly
  • 2-3 garlic cloves
  • Coriander leaves
  • 1 tsp lemon juice
  • ¼ tsp black pepper
  • 2 tsp tomato ketchup
  • Salt to taste

How to prepare Salsa

  • Firstly rinse the tomatoes and finely chop two of them and keep them aside.
  • Roughly chop another tomato and puree them in a mixer grinder until it gets a thick coarse texture. Do not add water.
  • Finely chop the other vegetables: onions, green chilly and garlic cloves.
  • In a large mixing bowl, add the chopped veggies along with the tomato puree.
  • The tomato puree will provide the base to salsa and along with that add tomato ketchup.
  • Season the Salsa with black pepper and salt as per taste. Add these spices at the time of serving only else they’ll release water at the time of refrigerating.
  • Garnish it with coriander leaves.
  • Refrigerate it for 2-3 hours before topping on the tortilla chips.
